It looks like the Media Bureau decided give the MPAA a little more power. According to this the media industry can
deactivate part of your TV, Cable box or DVR remotely.
There is a technology called “selectable output control” (SOC). Before now, movie studios and content companies were not allowed to use it.
It has nothing to do with TV broadcasting. although there is already strict licensing deals for HDCP you should be aware of. The waiver is limited to pre-release movies only, and it will be reviewed after two years. You can’t use SOC after the movie is on DVD.
So it really doesn’t affect very many people. Just folks, like reviewers or Howard Stern that get Pre-Release DVD’s from the movie studios and maybe a few people that seem to “find” those new releases.
But is this a step in the direction of stopping the ability stream video via analog devices like SlingBox or Monsoon’s Vulkano?
Hope not.

In the UK, almost all STBs now on sale have only low res analog outputs (composite or svideo, no component video) and only HDMI digital outputs. In this case the hid def HDMI output can be converted to hid def component video signals using the HDfury2 converter (costing a few hundred dollars).
