Not really big news but as expected, Echostar, the company behind Sling media, has just publicly unveiled a new set top

echostar_hds-600rs

box for the Eu. It is called the HDS-600RS which comes with some interesting features like Slingloaded and a pair of Freesat+ HD tuners.

The box allows the user to access up to 150 standard and high-definition channels available in the UK and to use Sling Media's "unique place-shifting ability" to allow you to place shift either live or recorded content from desktops, laptops, phones and tablets.

It comes with a 500GB hard disk…

Looks a bit fugly IMO, I now know where the Sling Catcher cases & remotes went ;)

But it's nice to see it in a device that will be headed for Europe.

I agree Sling Media could have created a better looking device. regardless of the looks it will be interesting to see the performance of the 600RS and the reviews on it.

I might have to pop into John Lewis and have a demo.

The price isn't too bad.

Having used an HDS-600RS for a couple of months with an old Slingcatcher 5000 miles away I can confirm the box is great. (HDS in London/Catcher in LA)

Best features; you can record one show while watching another, scroll quickly through the guide, easily set recordings and are advised of any conflicts (and it finds alternative bookings if this happens) and is fast to respond to commands.

I've never seen it in person as it was delivered to a relative but he says it looks fine in his TV unit.

Works perfectly with the Slingcatcher (despite Slingbox tech support saying it probably wouldn't) except the colored buttons don't line up. Still, you can delete programming from the hard drive by going online and using the virtual remote. All the other functions (play, ff, rewind, pause etc) work fine with the catcher remote.

Thumbs up from me!

Where is the best place to discuss the Echostar? Here?

I have a question – I have just ordered one of these mainly for it's Freesat PVR capabilities for a second home in France. If I purchased a Slingbox HD and installed it in my UK home can I use the devices to stream video from one country to the other for display on an attached TV? i.e. can the Echostar be used like a SlingCatcher or "SlingPlayer for Connected Devices"?

Tim.

The Echostar basically works like a Slingbox not like a SlingCatcher.

You could connect a computer or something like a GoogleTV box to your TV on the receiving end.
