Hello – I just came across Place Shifting, and I was wondering if it can be used to watch movies with a friend?

There has to be some way that a deployed military servicemen can watch a movie with their family while they're abroad. Right?

My friend and I live far away from each other. Much further than driving allows in a day. And we still would love to be able to watch a movie together. Ideally, one of us would be able to load a DVD disc in our PC's DVD player and both of us would watch that movie together, we would both like to have pause / rewind capabilities on the film. And we would likely use Skype for video chat during the film.

Is Place Shifting the right solution for this? What would my next steps be to get started?

Hello, this can be done easily with VLC media player. For example, you're creating a streaming server on your PC and your friend can receive the stream (or the other way around, whoever of you have better upload speed on your Internet connection). VLC is fairly easy to configure.

VLC does make that pretty easy but it is more for something you have already on your PC.

If you want to be able to just put a DVD into your player and have someone else watch it at the same time a Place Shifting device (SlingBox or Vulkano box) might be the best way to go.

Another option, although I have not tested yet, would be to get a Tely HD and have it show the video at the same time you can talk about it. IE; position your Tely HD to point at the TV and show the movie but at the same time send the audio from the movie and your discussion at the same time.

You can get more info on the Tely HD here Tely User Community
