**I was wondering if anyone knows how much tv time a person would get using a slingbox pro hd and having a 5 gb data plan for their ipad 2. I have been told that the slingbox pro hd model uses too much data and my data plan will be used up in a day. I basically would like to watch some tv up at my cottage when I am up there on the weekends at night. Thanks for any help!!! **

If it really streams in HD, you'll probably burn through 5GB* in much less than a day. My suggestion would be upgrade to unlimited data plan or use WiFi to a real ISP instead of 3G.

Short Answer -- my netbook (Linux, using Windows SlingPlayer 2) streams 320x240 well below HD at about 1Mbps when I'm teathering off my smartphone's data.

Given that, I can calculate for my usage:

1Mb/sec = 480MB/hour

5GB = 5000MB

5000MB / 480MB/hour = 10.4 hours, or 10 hours and 25 minutes of non-HD for 5GB.

There are 2 ways to find the answer for you:

Easy way -- check your account usage often, multiple times per day if needed. Stop using SlingPlayer when you get near 4GB. Beware, online billing (at least with Verizon) seems to show about 24 hours behind your real usage...so start slow until you get a feel for how fast you're burning data.

Mathematical way -- the following test, will give you the answer in about 2 days but it will take into account your usage. Make sure your billing period doesn't cycle or you'll get bad results when the counter resets to 0.

- Write down how much data you used so far in the month. Do not use SlingPlayer, but continue your normal activities.
- The same time the next day (24 hours since step 1) write down how much data you used so far in the month.
- subtract the amount of GB in step 1 from the amount of GB in step 2. This is your typical daily use.
- Now, run SlingPlayer for a known amount of time that hopefully won't run you over on data usage. For math sake, I'll say 15 minutes, this is 1/4 of an hour. After the time, close SlingPlayer and do not use it again.
- The next day (this is 24 hours since step 2) write down how much data you used so far in the month.
- Subtract the amount of GB in step 5 from the amount of GB in step 2. This is your typical daily use PLUS the use for SlingPlayer.
- Subtract the amount of GB in step 6 from the amount of GB in step 3. This is the amount of GB that SlingPlayer used.
- Now, you know how much GB you used in X minutes. Multiply or divide to get the amount of GB in an hour. If you ran SlingPlayer for 15 minutes, multiply by 4. Now you know how many GB you use in one hour.
- Almost done! Multiply the amount in step 6 (typical daily use) by 30 (days in a month). This is your typical monthly use (well, should be close).
- Subtract step 9 (typical monthly use) from 5GB. This gives you the amount of data you have left over before the limit.
- Divide the amount in step 9 (data remaining) by the amount in step 8 (GB per hour). FINALLY, this is the number of hours you can safely run SlingPlayer per billing cycle without going over your limit.

*I think you meant 5GB, as far as I know all providers measure the cap in Gigabytes (GB) not Gigabits (Gb). 1Gigabyte (GB)=8 Gigabits (Gb)
