Is there anyone out there that wants to sell a slingcatcher for a decent price? I have a slingbox that I want to watch in another room of my home, but since they stopped selling them people are asking a lot for them. Can anyone help me?

I dunno, it doesn't look like the SlingCatcher is far off from the original MSRP of $299.99 (http://www.slingmedia.com/get/io_1223556508503.html).  Granted that's not what they were going for once they got discontinued, since places were trying to get rid of their inventory.  But, it's pretty much a sellers market now.

Still, I would question why anyone would still try to get a SlingCatcher with all the reported problems it had.  Especially, since you can get an Acer Aspire REVO and a Gyration Media Center Remote to make themselve a better media center extender for less.

Better media extenders yes, but there is nothing that can catch your Slingbox or project your screen like it does. With all of it's problems it does a few things better than anything else does.

So, you're saying its impossible to run Slingplayer Desktop or VNC client on something like the Aspire Revo?

I'm hoping that the Google TV will allow the android player to be installed and its remote smart enough to replicate the slingcatcher remote functions.

I have a SC. My folks love it when they come from overseas. They love watching their programs on it on their big screen. Lucky I got it off craigslist for 80 bucks.

Totally agree with you.  Afterall, Slingplayer Mobile, Testtube, and Vulkano Player are already available on the Andriod platform.  So, if their FAQ remains true then it shouldn't be a problem.

Q. Will my existing Android apps work on Google TV?

A. After we make Android Market available, your applications will work on GoogleTV unless they require a hardware or software feature not supported by Google TV. However, we hope developers will optimize their applications for TV to tap into the opportunities provided by a big screen and TV content.

Update 9/3/2010: Shows are recorded to the DVR you have the Revue plugged into, not the “Cloud” like I first thought.

I am amazed the vulkano isn't simaliar or nobody has hacked a slingbox to make it have that software.

Also there is no wdlive roku popcornhr box xbox360 ps3 with slingbox cleint on it. Why has nobody tried to get this to work.

Your best bet on getting a good price on a used Slingcatcher is Craigslist.  I did nationwide Craigslist scans for a couple months before I found a seller in California who was willing to part on a barely used one for only around $100 plus $15 to ship to me.  No way was I going to pay the $300-$500 folks were asking for.

Maybe we need Alan to buy some in the UK and send them to us to sell here. Surprised

Craigslist is a good idea. Dish Network keeps showing their Sling Adapter and Sling Extender as coming soon so maybe we will see something on the market from them.

Coming Soon – More ways to enjoy TV Everywhere

Sling® Adapter

Add Slingbox technology to your current DVR and enjoy your favorite shows on the go using your computer or mobile device.

Sling® Extender

Add HDTV and DVR convenience anywhere in your house without the mess and hassle of coax cables.

But notice they say "anywhere in your house" nothing about remote viewing.

There's a big probem problem with trying to hack the Slingbox to be a Slingplayer client.  The Slingboxes have no graphics sub-system to provide video to a television.  They only have a transcoding processor that can transcode the baseband signals from the audio and video connections to a multimedia stream on the network.  In fact, the output connectors on the Slingbox are simple pass-through connectors that pass the signal from the inputs to the respective outputs.

The Vulkano does have the capability of being a client.  However, it is not currently supported at this time.  I'm not sure why that is, as one would think they could at least provide a Hava or Vulkano client on their new box.  After all, both Hava and Vulkano are intellectual properties of Monsoon Media.  I'm guessing that they're having a difficult enough time trying to fix the Vulkano firmware to meet the advertised services that they have tabled enchancements.

The main problem is that Sling Media encrypts their streams.  There is a product called "At-large Recorder" by Applian that was able to record the SlingStream.  However, it was soon met by the encryption that Sling Media subjected to their streams.  This part of the methodology that Sling Media touts as "SlingSecure".  So, the only way to get a SlingPlayer client on any device, it will have to made by Sling Media.

This is unlike Monsoon Media's Hava and Vulkano boxes.  Since, the streams by Monsoon Media are not encrypred and can use Real-Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) feeds, it wouldn't be difficult for someone to hack up a client.  Much like Over Voltage Software created the first Hava client on the Andriod, named "TestTube".  This was created before Monsoon Media had a Android client.

oh well it would be nice if there was a hack or mod to these slinboxes or even hava boxes. Problem buying off of ebay or craiglists. You get and it works for 1 week then it dies so your are SOL. My guess is most problems can be fixed easily but to find someone that can fix them would be hard.

Example my xbox get's RROD about 1 a yr for the past 2 yrs I  pay someone to fix for  25 bucks

I agree it would be nice.  However, it is very unlikely for a Slingbox or Hava boxes.  Since they don't have the required mechanisms to facilitate video or audio out.  It would be like expecting to be able to quick freeze something with a microwave oven.

As I understand, Sling Media has been working on a native Adobe Flash client.  Once they release it, you'll have much more options in watching your Slingbox.  It will be a matter or time before it is released.

That's what we are hoping too. If they can make it so anything with Flash can connect to the Slingbox then it opens everything up for all kinds of devices.
