After a thunderstorm our slingcatcher suddenly doesn't connect to the lan anymore. We just get the 'no network' message, and no network light on the catcher. The catcher is wired to a ZyXel P2602HWT router. Have already bought and tried a new power supply for the catcher, checked that the network cable and router port works. I'm wondering if a power surge could have damaged the network socket on the catcher. Has anyone else experienced this?

That doesn't sound good.  Do you have surge-protectors on your SlingBox, router, modem, and cable/DSL line?

First, I'd try a different port on your router or get a different router.  See if the LAN light comes on — if you're lucky that's all it it.

Second, try a different network cable or turn the one around.  I know it sounds crazy but I've had some cables where one end just doesn't want to fit in a particular LAN port properly.

If that doesn't work, try unplugging the network wire from the SlingCatcher and connect it to a computer (and turn off WiFi so it has to go through the cable).  If the computer works, your SlingCatcher probably took a hit in the storm.  If the computer doesn't work, post back here and maybe we can come up with more tests.

Hi Matt, thanks for replying to my post. I haven't got surge protectors (but will definetely get that sorted asap). I have tried everything you suggest apart from a different router as I haven't got one available. Do you think it's worth my while buying a new router? The light on the LAN port i used (router has 4 in all) with the catcher before/during the storm doesn't work anymore, but the other 3 seem to work fine (have tested with my laptop). I am also considering buying a new catcher as i'm assuming a borken network socket can't be repaired..? But maybe I should try a new router first….

Hmmm, if your computer works in the other LAN ports on your router, it sounds like a new router wouldn't fix this problem (though I think it killed the one port on your router so your choice if you replace it).

You have the cable you tested with the computer so that works.  Try plugging that cable from a known-working port (the light comes on) on your router to the slingcatcher.  See if either the link-light on the router, or LAN light on the SlingCatcher comes on?

There's a slim chance the one port on your router took the hit and the SlingCatcher survived if you're really lucky.

btw, I suggest Lowe's or another hardware store for cheap surge protectors, anything rated for Satellite/TV should be fine.  Don't waste money on overpriced Monster surge protectors from someplace like BestBuy, you can get the same thing cheaper almost anywhere else.  Remember, the surge can come in on the outlet, phone, TV-cable, any utility is equally vulnerable.

The link light on the router comes on but not the LAN light on the catcher. I better start looking for a replacement catcher then… Thanks for your all your help + the advice on surgeprotectors.

btw, this is a great forum. Thanks to here I fixed the capacitors on the slingbox which has worked like a dream ever since.
