I was looking at a new article on Slingbox.com and in just reading this I can see how so many people are confused.
First the article.
Here are detailed Mac OS system recommendations for setting up your Slingbox and watching TV on Slingbox.com.
|
MINIMUM SYSTEM RECOMMENDATIONS
|
|
|
Minimum Mac Requirements
|
HD Streaming: Intel 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo class processor or equivalent with 2 GB of RAM
SD Streaming: Intel-based Mac with 2 GB of RAM
Operating System: Mac OS 10.5.7 (Leopard) or later
Browser Support: Apple Safari 4 or higher, Firefox Version 3 or higher
|
|
Network & Bandwidth
|
HD Streaming: 3 Mbps or higher*
SD Streaming: 600 Kbps or higher
Mobile Streaming: 150 Kbps or higher
|
|
|
|
* Note: HD Streaming is only
available if you have an HD video source hooked up to a Slingbox PRO-HD
and meet the minimum system recommendations. Other Slingbox models will
not stream in HD.
Under "Network & Bandwidth" it says HD Streaming: 3 Mbps or higher.
Is that upload speed, download speed over LAN or WAN?
In just this simple article I can see how people get confused.
Not to mention the HD streaming and SD streaming part of it. Does that mean I can't stream my HD TV to a Pro or just what?
It's no wonder people are cunfused when they read or try to understand this stuff.

Yes, it applies to the upload and download speed if the Slingbox and Slingplayer are on seperate networks. The location of the Slingbox requires a sustained upload speed of 3Mbps in order to sustain a HD stream. The location of the Slingplayer requires a sustain download speed of 3MBps in order to sustain a HD stream.
Local area networks are usually moot, since Ethernet networks are at least 10Mbps. In fact, its more common to see Fast Ethernet works which are rated at 100Mbps or Gigabit Ethernet which is rated at 1000Mbps.

No, you can't. The Slingbox Pro takes the input from the baseband signals and transcodes the stream. The Slingplayer client receives the stream from the Slingbox to be viewed on your device.
I think though, you might have inadvertantly used the wrong preposition, "from" instead of "to". So, if you're asking whether or not you can stream HD TV from your Slingbox Pro. The answer is "kinda". The Slingbox Pro is able to accept inputs resolution as high as 1080i. However, it has to downscale to SD resolution in order to stream it. This is the same as the Slingbox Solo.
Only the Slingbox Pro-HD has the computing power to support HD (1080i) streaming.
That's all great info but you do realize I know all this stuff right? I am not really asking these questions.
My comment was that "In just this simple article I can see how people get confused."
I wasn't looking for help. the post was about how even the simplest of questions can get confused and not addressed properly by the folks at Sling Media.

Actually, no. In my old line of work, I have found it better to not assume what a person may or may not know.
I can understand how certain verbage can be misleading or vague. For most people, reading is hard and writing is harder. Hell, after re-reading some of my own posts, I wonder if even I retained anything learned from school.

If you think that's a kick in the pants checkout the difference between the minimum requirements of the Mac vs PC from this page (http://support.slingbox.com/go/wbsp-faq)
What are the system requirements for Windows PCs?
- To watch Live TV from your Slingbox within a Web browser on your Windows PC, you need:
- Windows XP or Windows Vista
- One of the following Web browsers:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or above
- Firefox 2 or above
- 1 GB of RAM
- A configured Slingbox with the latest Slingbox Software installed
- A Sling Account
What are the system requirements for Macs?
- To watch Live TV from your Slingbox within a Web browser on your Mac, you need:
- An Intel-based Mac
- Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) or later
- One of the following Web browsers:
- Safari 3
- Firefox 3
- 1 GB of RAM
- One of the following Slingbox models with the latest Slingbox Software installed
- Slingbox PRO-HD
- Slingbox PRO
- Slingbox SOLO
- A Sling Account
Earlier Slingbox models (like the original Slingbox Classic, Slingbox TUNER, and Slingbox AV) will not work with Watch on Slingbox.com.
Notice how the Mac requirements change. Now all of the sudden, "Earlier Slingbox models (like the original Slingbox Classic, Slingbox TUNER, and Slingbox AV) will not work with Watch on Slingbox.com."
