Preempetively changed two capacitors

I'm going to be away a LOT, so I decided to preempetively change the two 470uF 16v capacitors before they caused a problem in my Slingbox Solo.  I used the 35V from Radio Shack (Part No. 272-1030 $1.39 each).  The originals looked fine, but I decided to just go ahead and replace them.

I'm wondering whether there have been any indications that the 220uF 25v capacitor should be replaced?  Are there indications that after replacing the two 470uF 16v with 35v capacitors that the 220uF 25v will eventually require replacement?

I'd also like to confirm for people that you will probably need to rock the old capacitors out of their solder, heating up one solder point and then the other.   And unless you completely clear the holes of solder, you will also need to rock in the new ones.  It also isn't a bad idea to have some desoldering braid to help clean up excess solder.  If you are starting from scratch, you just might want to get a kit that includes a soldering iron, solder and desoldering braid.

Off hand, I don't remember anyone having issues with the 220uF 25v capacitors.

Good tip! Getting the old ones out and new ones in is a little tricky.

Thanks Brandon!  Hopefully, no problems will develop.  What is the longest anyone has operated a Slingbox after switching out the capacitors?

Good question. I have never heard anyone say they had to replace the same capacitors over again. Other than Power Supply issues it seems the rest of the hardware don't have problems.

Do people replace the power supply with another vendor's power supply, or something else?

Most people replace their power supply with another one from Sling Media. They are $20.00 and guaranteed to work with a Slingbox. There are cheaper ones out there but it can be confusing if they will work with a Slingbox so to avoid the confusion they get one directly from Sling.

It seems the problem with the power supply is that it can have a literal meltdown or just stop working.  Is there a known issue, or just bad luck?  Should I replace it, or just keep using the one I have got?

From what I see the power supplies have the same capacitor going bad issue as the Slingbox Solo does.

I don't know if the newer ones they sell have the same problem. If you are not having any problem now there is no need to replace it but it doesn't hurt to have a backup. smile

That is ridiculous! How depressing! I am going to be away a lot and I don't want it to suddenly fail on me!
