Hi all,

Let me just say a big thank you first for this site, as I finally am finding some answers as to why my slingbox is acting up.

I haven't been able to get my pro-hd to connect properly for a couple months.  The setup and directory could see the box on the network, but any attempt to connect fails and trying to run the setup routine usually crashes.  I tried rebooting and reconfiguring everything multiple times lalong with resets and nothing.

Then I finally came across this capacitor issue and took apart my box.  Guess what, the two caps in the same spot as the ones on the solo are bulging and actually leaking electrolyte.  The way Sling is treating such a huge defect is unbelievable to me.  There should have been a recall right away.

In any case, I am going to attempt to replace them and hopefully my problems will go away.  I'm thinking that is the issue.

So, the Pro-HDs are just as poorly made as the Solos apparently, be warned.

I was able to successfully repair two PRO-HDs that had bad capacitors. But the third one, even after capacitor replacement is not working (flashing lights). So maybe PRO-HDs are more harder to repair?

Damn, got both caps replaced and it is still having the same problem.  I get a connection error trying to connect on either slingbox.com or SlingPlayer.  I was so hopeful that was the cause.  I'm now guessing that one of the recent firmware updates bricked my box.

If you're sure that they are replaced properly, try to replace the power supply. In my case this third PRO-HD doesn't work even with new power supply, but in your case it might help.

Another success story from bad capacitors. My Solo was out of warranty so I had no problem opening the box. Sorry kinda long story.

1) Opened my Solo from instructions above.

2) Noticed the 2 capacitors were only slightly raised but decided to replace anyway.

3) Replaced the capacitors, powered back up but now only have the power light on and no link (2nd) light on.

4) After about 5 minutes I heard a big pop. Ooops, installed 1 of 2 caps backwards (+/- crossed). Back to the Shack for another cap. I was surprised I didn't blow the whole board.

5) Soldered the new cap, powered on and now no lights.

6) Opened the Solo up again and noticed the solder was touching both positive and negative leads. I was surprised I didn't pop another cap. Fixed the solder job.

7) Powered on. Now getting the power light and no network/link light.

8) Went to Best Buy and bought a new Solo, BUT wait, decided to do one more test. I cut open the old AC Adapter and long behold I had popped caps in the old AC adapter. I took the new AC Adapter from the new Solo I just bought and plugged it in to the old Solo.

9) SUCCESS! The old Solo is up and working again. Whew!

10) I ordered a replacement AC adapter from ebay and will use that when it comes in. When the replacement AC Adapter comes in I will be taking back the new Solo for a refund next week and a savings of $160.

Lesson learned and as others have said – if you replace bad caps on the board and it still doesn't fix your problem check and/or replace the AC Adapter.
