Slingbox Pro (red box) can't get started please help

Hi All

Please help.  I have been struggling with my slingbox all weekend.

Maybe around three years ago I got a slingbox pro.  For a variety of reasons, I've not hooked it up until now.

I figured I would be dealing with outdated software and firmware, but reckoned all I needed to do was a few updates and would be on my way.  I know now how wrong I've been.

the condition is I've got slingplayer installed, several times, from the original software that came with the box, to slingplayer 2.0.03xxx.  With each slingplayer I try to get the firmware updated, but each time failed with unable to connect to the slingbox, or simply stuck midway while updating.

even the original slingplayer won't work with my (now) newer model and make cable boxes AND cannot connect to the slingbox to update firmware.

I have read some of the other threads and someone mentioned checking the current firmware version.  How do I do that?

Thanks for reading thus far and I realise I may have a complex problem starting with me being quite tech-less.  Please help me.
