I just wanted to add another success story regarding the capacitor replacement fix. After reading this forum and the stories about the bad capacitors, I opened my Slingbox Solo and found evidence of the same problem. Two bulging capacitors with one of them leaking through the vent in the top. There was a third capacitor rated at 25v that looked fine, so I left it in place.
I got two 470uf 35v capacitors. a soldering iron and some rosin solder (60% tin/40% lead) from Radio Shack (total cost about $12), watched a couple of u-tube videos on how to solder and went about fixing the Slingbox. It was pretty straightforward, but a little nerve-wracking for a novice to take a hot soldering iron to the circuit board of the Slingbox, but once I made up my mind to fix it or trash it, I was all in. The existing solder is pretty hardened and did not melt too quickly for me (30-watt soldering iron), but it did and I cleared as much of the solder as I could using a solder sucker (probably wasn't really needed … the solder on the existing joint was very small and I never really cleared it all anyway) and then pulled the old capacitors out with the iron in place to keep the solder liquid. Once I got those out, getting the new capacitors in was pretty easy. They are larger than the originals, but they fit fine. Been streaming for about 30 minutes now, which is about 30 minutes longer than it was doing before applying this fix!
Thanks to everyone for posting about this issue. I never would have tried anything like this without having a clear path to follow.
Glad to year of your success!
Your story is about the same as mine — I have the RadioShack dual 15/30 watt iron and I think 30 watts is a bit low for melting the original solder, but it does work. I recently fixed a HP m8200n desktop computer by replacing 12 (8 bulging) large motherboard capacitors and had the same issue you describe. I learned a lot doing the first few. The hardest part of fixing these is clearing out the hole (or keeping the solder liquid) while inserting the new capacitor. You were smart to get the solder-sucker thing, it's possable without that but much easier if you have the right tool. I need to get one of those.
TIP: Instead of trying to melt the old soler immediately let the iron get good & hot (e.g. for 5-7 minutes) then, while touching the iron to the old joint, ADD a tiny bit of fresh solder to the old joint. It will melt MUCH faster that way — I'm not sure if it's the increased contact area from the new moltin solder or if it mixes with the old solder but either way it works.
P.S. Don't do this on sleep deficit and try to grab the business end of the iron (or forget to unplug it) like I did. Trust me, it's hot. If you do get burned, I can recommend Aloe gel available at most drug stores.

Hi All – Just to let you know that I replaced the two 470 uF caps and my Solo has now been running continuously for 6 hours. According to my wife, it would only last 5 min or less for the past 6 months.
Also to let you know that Sling BANNED me from their forum for posting that I had successfully replaced the caps and the unit was now (then for 30 min) working. Unbelievable – I said nothing snarky about Sling, only that I had replaced the caps, the unit was working and if you do it yourself to watch out for polarity and to purchase caps with radial leads.
Banning me for my informative, non-critical posts indicates to me that they KNOW about a hardware problem and are trying to FUD it up with that 14 year old girl Dana and her cutsey style and delaying until they get a sub or supplier on the hook or until people get disgusted and give up.
Many kudos to this site for telling the truth.

I think a class action lawsuit would change Sling Media's tune.
It absolutely ticks me off that they have what appears to be manufacturing defects and want to charge to replace a out of warranty unit. I will bet they still turn a profit for the $99 they want to charge. I will be breaking mine open with a soldering iron very soon.
Mitsibushi Motors has done this on their cars painted with deffective black paint. It will cost me $$$ to have the car painted, but the at least the Class Action Lawsuit will pay part of the bill. Needless to say its the last Mitsubishi that I will buy.
This will be the last sling box I will buy.
Check out http://www.monsoonmultimedia.com/products.html
I am suprised no other manufacturers havent used this for sales….By my box and I will give you a trade in on your sling box.

@Don – Seems at a minimum that Sling could offer an explanation and outline a replacement procedure. But, absent the explanation, perhaps that is what they are doing. After reading the recent posts on the Sling forum (magically, I've been allowed back in!), it seems like they have picked up the pace on replacing units. The problem, though, in my mind is that it still costs $99.00 (plus shipping one way depending on the return option that you choose) and the parts necessary for the fix are about $3.00 (2 x 470 uF caps). For the $99, you get a re-furb – someone else's problem box that may or may not have been repaired correctly and there is more than one post about the re-furb not working!
I don't know the requirements for a law suit but I'd settle for less FUD and more honesty from Sling. After all, the thread on Sling started 8 months ago! But, like you, I'm no longer a Sling customer. When my repaired Solo quits, I'll buy anything else!

Well, as I posted above, I was locked out of the Sling Forums and had my two posts deleted. On a whim I tried to get in the other day and I was able to post; but, it was a short-lived success - yet again, my posts have been deleted and now Sling has decided to terminate the topic! Check it out here: http://answers.slingbox.com/message/25922#25922.
My reading of the referenced support article revealed NO MENTION of any out-of-warranty repairs by Sling. So, as I and many others have surmised, Sling is sweeping the bad cap issue under the rug and leaving their suckers customers high and dry. Let me repeat that – if your Solo is 367 days old and has defective capacitors that prevent it from working properly, Sling has no provision in their new support article/policy to take care of you. Sling has abandoned you knowing that they have a hardware issue.
Until such time as that oft mentioned lawsuit against Sling and their faulty product(s) is a reality, please join me in telling the truth about Sling's treatment of its customers and its faulty products by writing reviews on Amazon, Newegg and any other such site. I have written reviews on each site as well as on PC World.
Thanks for the heads up. I restarted a thread there. http://answers.slingbox.com/message/25936?tstart=0#25936
It may not be up for long but if it is you can reply there.

Thanks, but I don't think that I'll waste my time – I've had 4 posts deleted so far! And all of them were decorous posts; now, they wouldn't be!
Like you, I've been a Slingbox owner for a long time and remember the time when they cared about me as a customer – not so today, so it is time for me to become a Vulkano customer when my repaired Solo bites the dust.
That said, I'd be willing to do my share in a class action proceeding, however.
BTW – My Solo with the replaced caps probably has 25 +/- streaming hours on it without a drop; and not a wasted minute or dollar with Sling tech support! Also, NO HELP from Sling – the only help that I received was from this site!

Another thread deleted…it's like they're deliberately purging their forums.
Could you install Bigger and Better Capacitors?

P.S. My SlingBox has been rock solid since I replaced the caps and power supply back at the beginning of October. I use mine at least an hour a day and often let it run in the background like a radio (I let it keep streaming video just minimized) just to "keep me company" so I'll let you all figure out the number of hours it's been running. I do have a new isuse developing but I think it's something with my network (I made a post in the Networking section of this forum).

I just replaced the two 470 microfarad capacitors and voila, everything is good, ending ma month of frustration<img class="sfsmiley" title="Laugh" onclick="sfjLoadSmiley('sf-laugh.gif', 'Laugh', 'http://placeshiftingenthusiasts.com/wp-content/forum-smileys/', '
', '1');" src="http://placeshiftingenthusiasts.com/wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-laugh.gif" alt="Laugh" />, reconfiguration, resetting, teting of network connections, hours on hold waiting to talk to sling support. $8 in parts from Radio shack and life is good.
Thanks for the great guidance!

Guess what, i was experiencing the disconnect problems for a couple of months now, i opened the slingbox today, and found out that the 2 470 capacitors are bulging. Bought 2 new ones (80 eurocents in total lol) and my father wil solder them on this week. Will keep you posted if this will solve the problem!

I started to have these problems with my sling classic and decided to
get a new solo through an upgrade offer because i wanted some tech
support and the functionality that a new box would provide (mobile for
one). The new solo is giving me the same problem. tech support is
sending me a new power supply but
I have a hard time believing that would be the problem. Could it really
be? Finally, it is working fine within the network at home, just not
over the internet. They say that this is a normal indication of a power supply problem. Would it be a normal indication of the capacitor issue as well?
